Not a magic bullet

See the whole month before the month gets away.

Goodguys Badguys is a budget you can set up quickly, then keep honest in a few minutes a day. Some days it is seconds. The plan, the spending, and the bank sit on one screen, so you can look and get on with the day.

Why it exists

A country gets its money under control the same way a house does. By looking.

Not with a speech, and not with an app that promises to fix a life. Goodguys Badguys is the daily look: what you meant to spend, what you did spend, and what is still coming. One kitchen table can do that. A lot of kitchen tables can do that. That is as far as the claim goes.

If you can see the month, you can still change the month.

  1. 01

    Build the sheet once

Income, the bills with due dates, the discretionary lines, savings. A setup walk-through suggests the ordinary ones, and you keep only what you actually have.

  2. 02

    Enter the day

Type the actual when you spend it. A short series such as 12+9+4 is enough. Projected bills stay marked until they are paid.

  3. 03

    Close the month

What is left can be split across budget goals. The next month opens from the ending balances, and you can type over them.

On that one screen

Good is green. Bad is red. The rest is the plan.

You should not have to open five reports to know if the month is holding. The names are plain on purpose. A good line stayed inside the budget. A bad line did not. If other discretionary money can still cover an overage, the sheet says so.

Plan and projected

Gold is the plan, and gold on an actual means it has not cleared yet. Paid lines settle into the quieter color.

The bank has to agree

Nothing connects to a bank. You type the balance you see. The sheet shows whether the month matches it, including tips that have not cleared.

Goals wait until the month closes

Money set aside for something later, a repair, a trip, solar, is not treated as spent. It rolls only when you close the month.

Your file stays yours

The workbook is a file on your computer or on a USB drive. Windows and Linux. It is not an account at a bank, and it is not an advertisement.

The installers are not on this site yet. When they are, you will choose a folder, including a USB drive, and a shortcut will start the sheet. Until that day, this page is the announcement, not the download.
